A loft-style house from an old barn in Karelia

This barn in Karelia was built in 1959. Hay for animals, firewood for kindling and other rubbish was previously stored there. It stood idle for a long time until new owners were found for the site. Having bought the land, the current owner, Mikhail, decided not only to clean the old barn, but to make a full-fledged house out of it for subsequent renting on Airbnb and his own residence. Quite a bold decision on his part, but turning an old barn into a magnet for travelers is possible indeed, especially if it is located near a small lake in a pine forest and professionals from the Mossebo design studio will take over it.

If you look at the barn today, first from the outside, and then go inside, you will immediately notice a strong contrast between the interior and the exterior. Outside, this unusual house, rather, resembles a traditional agricultural building, but the interior pleasantly surprises with its modern design and comfort.

To achieve this effect, the barn had to be subjected to many tests. The walls of the barn and the roof were partially destroyed, so in some places they had to be rebuilt, in some places to reinforce what was left with a wooden crate. At the same time, we added a veranda with a garage and a roofed shower on the same crate. Then we brought in electricity, installed a modern sewage system, dismantled and completely replaced the floors.

The transformation of the barn into a full-fledged house took place with the help of simplest materials and colors. A rather interesting and original project was the result we were seeking for. Now the building includes a living room combined with a kitchen, a bedroom on the second attic floor, a veranda, a garage, a bathroom and an outdoor shower.

We chose the style relying on a harsh nature of Karelia and the architecture of the building. High ceilings with exposed beams, brickwork and concrete – loft was a perfect solution deciding the interior. The designer wanted to leave this room open and airy, so we have retained some of the features of the barn. The wooden beams and concrete walls were left untouched, and the brutality of the bathroom was enhanced with a bath and sink, carved from a natural stone.
